“With this item we were not looking for a particular shape rather a way to enhance the characteristics of each material.
In Floating Wood, the material shapes the item.
To realise this item, we asked ourselves how to build a box using four different materials: plexy, wood, light and gravity.”
The box can be utilised individually or paired with more and it houses two wooden blocks that can be used as internal shelves as well as legs of the unit.
“Why use glues, nails or screws, when we can use gravity to connect two parts together? The trapezoidal shape is not an aesthetic choice, but allows the wooden blocks to exploit the force of gravity to remain stable and float inside the box.”
The plexy is also an optical fiber. Through a unique artisan technique, transparent slabs are joined to thin coloured layers which result in an iridescent and changeable watery colours item. Thanks to this chromatic effect, the intensity of the colours changes depending on the direction of the light.
Plexy is one of the most transparent material in the world. To emphasize this, we made it to look like two pieces of wood float within the same item.
The trapezoidal shape is not an arbitrary aesthetic choice but it allows the wooden blocks to float inside the boxes.
The wooden blocks come from century-old joists, dismantled from rural houses in the tuscan countryside. Speaking of sustainability and to remind us of the true value of natural products, those objects intended to be disposed of are reused.
